Gin Rummy is a classic two-player card game that was first created in 1909. It is played with a standard 52-card deck and involves each player taking turns drawing from either the deck or discard pile, while also discarding one card from their hand. The player's cards are categorized into melds and deadwood. Melds are combinations of three or more cards, such as a straight of three cards in the same suit or four of a kind (e.g. three Aces). Any cards in a player's hand that do not belong to a meld are considered deadwood. The player's Deadwood count is determined by the sum of the face values of their deadwood, with J, Q, and K each worth 10 points.

The game continues with players picking up and discarding cards until one player decides to "knock". A player can only knock when their Deadwood count is below 10, according to the rules of Regular Gin Rummy. At this point, both players' cards are revealed for assessment. Points are then awarded to the player with the lower Deadwood count, and additional bonus points are given for having a deadwood count of 0, also known as Gin.

During the dealing phase, the dealer alternates between players from hand to hand, with the first dealer being randomly selected at the beginning of the game. The dealer starts by dealing 10 cards to each player and then reveals the 21st card, which is moved to the top of the discard pile. The non-dealing player has the choice to take the first discard or Pass, allowing the dealer to potentially take it instead.

Gameplay involves each player taking turns drawing and discarding a card. The player must draw a card first from either the discard pile or the deck and then decide whether to go Gin or discard one card to the discard pile. Players continue taking turns until one of them either goes Gin or decides to knock.

A player can knock when their deadwood count is less than or equal to 10 after discarding. The option to knock must be selected before discarding the card and is only available if knocking is possible. Going Gin means having a hand that consists only of melds without any deadwood. There is also a special case called a Big Gin, which occurs when a player has 11 cards that form a Gin. In Straight mode, all hands are played until either a Gin or Big Gin is achieved.

If a player knocks and does not go Gin, the opposing player receives an opportunity to remove some of their deadwood before scores are calculated. Cards that can be added to the knocking player's melds are not included in the deadwood count.

Scoring in Gin Rummy is based on the player with the lowest deadwood count after layoffs. The winner earns points equal to the difference between the two deadwood counts. Bonus points can also be awarded for going Gin or achieving an Undercut. In Oklahoma, if the upturned card is a Spade, both hand points and bonuses count as double. Aces are worth 1 point, face cards (J, Q, K) equal 10 points each, and all other cards are worth their numerical value.

Undercutting occurs when the knocking player loses the hand. If the opponent has a lower deadwood count, before or after layoffs, they win the hand and receive an undercut bonus of 25 points. An undercut happens when the defending player has a deadwood count that is lower than or equal to the knocking player's count.
